“If the whole world were one country, Istanbul would be its capital” Napoleon Bonaparte once said. Istanbul, once known as Constantinople and Byzantium before that, is a bridge connecting two worlds; the East and the West. The city hosts astonishing accumulation of cultures, religions, beliefs, races and languages. With its history dating back to ancient times, Istanbul has managed to blend the traditional and the modern in the attractive multi-cultural mosaic. I personally assure that you will find something interesting and delightful to your own personal taste. 

It is a great pleasure and honor to have the opportunity to organize such a prestigious congress in Istanbul. The Istanbul Congress Center, which is within walking distance to 4-5 star hotels, is built in the heart of the city and it is ready to house more than 10.000 guests. Dear distinguished colleagues and friends,

It is a great honor and privilege to reach neurosurgeons from all around the world through this issue of WFNS Newsletter. First of all, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all friends and delegates who supported and elected Istanbul as the host city of the 2017 WFNS World Congress of Neurosurgery, in 2011. Since the election day we have been working very hard to organize a perfect congress to be remembered with its best possible scientific program and very attractive social events. At this juncture, I feel fully obliged to express my sincere gratitude and thankfulness to colleagues and friends for the support and suggestions for a higher quality and more productive meeting.

We have taken care to share the developments with you via the web page of our congress, wfns2017.com, which has been active since 2013. Recently this web page took on a new task: collecting suggestions for the scientific program. Simply log on to the web site and click on the “Suggest a Speaker or Topic” link. This is a unique opportunity given to the participants in order to deliver the widest range of topics from speakers all around the globe.

I would like to remind you all that the abstract submission and scholarship applications via the web page continue. We promised to provide registration and accommodation scholarship for young neurosurgeons, residents and woman neurosurgeons and are waiting for the applications of all colleagues in this context.

Dear friends, recently we have experienced tragic attacks throughout the world, which upset us all. Unfortunately, Istanbul was also affected by these global attacks, which raised some concerns about the safety of the congress. We hope that 2017 will be a year, in which peace is restored throughout the world but in any case, I would like to ensure that, during the congress period, extra measures will be taken by Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and national government of Turkey. President of our Federation, Dr. Tu and Secretary Dr. Misra will come to Istanbul to both supervise our preparations and to get together with the local and national authorities to address the security issues. I would like you to know that we are working meticulously to remove any concerns you might have regarding security.

Beside these, as we promised, we are working very hard for a congress for every budget. Our global valued sponsors are supporting us without hesitation in this regard. Besides, we will offer you more economical conditions than many congresses, held recently, by having one on one meetings with the lodging facilities. Dear Distinguished members of WFNS, dear friends and beloved colleagues,

With the great trust put in us, we are determined, now more than ever, to deliver a state-of-the-art cutting edge congress, worthy of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies. We are humbled and motivated by the positive feedback we received during the World Congress site inspection from Prof. Tu and Prof. Misra on our chosen venue, Istanbul Congress Center, to hold the prestigious congress at.

We are delighted and pleased for our congress organizational preparations to have satisfied expectations. We, the Organizing Committee, are looking forward to go beyond for this congress to be the success it deserves, in valuable cooperation with the Turkish Neurosurgical Society.

The assistance and support of our highly-regarded Governor and Mayor of Istanbul has reassured more attention to the safety of all participants, ensuring the security of the congress site and all hotels hosting our highly-honored guests.

With this opportunity, I would like to thank all abstract submissions from 92 countries and am pleased to announce the abstract number to have set a record by reaching 2225. The scientific committee evaluated these abstracts and concluded the assessment quickly. As defined by the World Bank of Developing Countries list, all applicants originating from those countries and fitting the criteria were granted a scholarship, as we promised. Our support for female neurosurgeons and our young fellow surgeons won’t cease.

Furthermore, it is our pleasure to announce that the scientific level of WFNS 2017 Istanbul Congress is assured to be an impressive success with the contributions of 621 distinguished speakers from all over the world. We would like to stress our appreciation to those colleagues who will be presenting in this prestigious event.
